Islam! it is not simply a religion. Rather, it is a complete way of life, defining CORRECT Moral, Political, and Economic behavior for individuals, and nations alike. I am not making this claim only because I am a Muslim, but also because it's FAIR in its essence and logic. There is a proof and reason to each and every aspect discussed in the Hadith and Quran. For example; the concept of Islamic Banking is fair rather than Interest Banking because it does not take advantage of the poor, does not make debtors homeless, and eliminates the possibilities of recessions and disasters like the one that happened in 2008. So rather than advancing in man-made theories like democracy or anarchy -which have their absolute biases- why not implement and believe in theocracy?
Theocracy is the principle that religious authority should prevail over political authority. Theocracy's dark side -it interferes a lot in people's personal life- is considered very harsh and therefore people disbelieve in Islamic Regimes. The one prevailing in Iran, though fundamentally Islamic and logical, is opposed by many living there. They believe the Iranian State does not take into account the modern aspects of human life, and thus hinders progress and freedom of individuals. Though their perspective is valid, the next paragraph will focus on how to bring the two extremes together.
Whenever we try to pass through a valid theory, we often ignore the brighter aspects of anything, and we rather stick to the darker sides. Same goes with Islamic Regimes, we mention the atrocities of Iran, but ignore Islamic Regimes and systems prevailing in countries like Malaysia which are more politically plural and flexible. These successful states can be considered benchmarks where both Islamic and Social Affairs are brought together.

Countries such as Turkey, Indonesia and Malaysia may according to some be examples of a perfectly functioning Islamic government. However, I believe that is not the case. These countries exemplify how prosperity has been achieved by separating religion from the state.
@Faraz: Countries often give credit to secularism for their success. Well that's a big misconception prevailing. It's actually the religion, our BELOVED ISLAM, that has given the basis to form and run a state successfully. It was Hazrat Umer Farooq (R.A) who introduced the system of Police. Point is we need not to stereotype our religion as unfair and cruel. Rather we should be thankful for the fact that it has paved a way for us to achieve immeasurable success.
