Session 7: Democracy in Pakistan

Even though we present our country as a democratic state operating under the rules made “by the people”, but we all know much better that there is no practical evidence in support of this label. The three principle questions of democracy; “Who are the people?” “In what sense should the people rule?” and “How far should popular rule extend?” remain a complete mystery to the governing body as well as the citizens of the state. Winston Churchill’s words hold true importance here when we try to explain the democratic structure of Pakistan. Like he said, it is the worst form of government especially if we keep in mind the present situation of Pakistan.

By taking a look at the history of our country, we will be able to realize that the very popularity of democracy has crippled its true meaning and has fashioned into a mere term of excitement rather than a form of government. From a system ruled by the people, it has now evolved into a structure fabricated in politics and obscured by a system of party competition and popular elections. How these parties operate, manipulate and forge our governing method and the extent of the democracy observed in the elections is not unknown to any Pakistani citizen.

I agree with you.
Moreover, the question arises that are we even an establiahed democratic state or are we atruggling to become one?

Our constituition has been abbrogated five times duringv the last 67 years (4 military coups and a suspension of judiciary in 2007).

Now we see the establishment of these military courts in the name of national security.
Although they have been establiahed through the democratic proceedure, but their exiatence go completely against tye notions of democracy.
