Session 7: Democracy

Democracy, the world itself, arouses strong positive emotions which transforms it into a Gladstone bag which, with a little manipulation, can be made to accommodate almost any collection of social facts we may wish to carry about in it. That is why, either be it the western capitalism, communism or either monarchy, everyone find it psychologically necessary to claim their form of rule as democratic in one way or in other. These connotations probably arise from the establishment of democracy as the best form of government in our day and age by the defeat of communism and the rise of liberal democracy. Of course the fall of communism does not mean that the ideology communism pushes is flawed because the idea of a democracy where everyone is equal in actuality and no one has a better shot at getting power because of their social background because there is no class system, is in essence the true portrayal of democracy. Compared to this, liberal democracy, as the communists would say is the democracy of the elite bourgeoisie, who have the means to contest elections, and who will only look after their own interest and not the interest of the majority. This leads to a form of autocracy of the elite as opposed to a democracy as shown by a research on the US which showed that US is an oligarchy because a few large companies or interest groups back candidates which win the presidential elections and then protect their interests. Thus, the idea of democracy as propagated by communism is closer to the ideals of democracy, than that of liberal democracy.
