A
leader is someone who commands a group of people or an organization. To be
successful in today’s competitive business world one needs to be a good leader –
but what makes a good leader?
“Leadership
is hard to define and good leadership even harder. But if you can get people to
follow you to the ends of the earth, you are a great leader.” – Indra Nooyi
The
three main leadership styles are laissez-faire leadership, transactional
leadership and transformational leadership.
Laissez-faire
leadership allows group members a lot of autonomy; this means that workers can
freely discuss ideas and without a leader always on their back they may be more
creative. However, no order is established and therefore there may be delays
and chaos.
Transformational
leadership revolves around developing relations with and motivating workers. Consequently
workers feel inspired and perform better.
Transactional
leadership runs on rewards and punishments, this means that workers always have
an incentive to perform well and there is a clear chain of command.
There
is a lot of debate on which of these styles are the best; perhaps each person
should choose a style in accordance to their set of skills.
