Session: 6 Damaging Effects of Democracy

In democratic states such as the US, capitalism plays a huge role. Although such a system has many advantages, it affects economies of different countries in different ways and therefore in some countries it does more harm than good. An example of its damaging effects is the accumulation of wealth in the upper classes while the lower classes face severe poverty. In the modern age, most countries are trying to adopt a democratic system of governance like that of the first world. However, due to various situation-based aspects, many have failed to achieve the positive outcomes of a liberalized democratic nation and have instead seen the negative results play a greater role. In my opinion, Pakistan is one of these nations (despite the fact that since its formation, dictators have ruled for longer than elected parties). Unequal distribution of wealth has led to a large percentage of the population lying below the poverty line.  This chunk of population is also uneducated and so unaware of their basic rights. The ability of these people to make rational decisions when it comes to electing parties etc is almost non-existent as not only are they unable to fight for their rights but also due to the presence of a feudal system and the ‘ruling elite’, voting is usually based on where one’s loyalty lies or to which group one belongs rather than who best represents their needs. So the question arises, which system should then be adopted that would lead to a thriving economy and a welfare state? Would communism be a better option for such countries? As a supporter of liberalism and individualism, I believe the state should show minimal interference. What then should be done? Many, like myself, are looking for an answer to this question.
