Session 6 ; Indian democracy

The Indian democracy is the biggest in the world, but is it as vibrant and invincible as the Indian politicians would want us to believe? The Indian democracy like many democracies around the world is flawed. The Indian general elections of 2014 brought the right leaning BJP into power with an unprecedented mandate and propelled their front man Narendra Modi into the highest corridor of power, The Rashtrapati Bhavan.

But what led the Indians to vote for the BJP, a strong proponent of ‘Hindutva’ instead of the Indian National Congress, which has strong secular and pluralistic values? The answer to that question is deliverance rather than ideology. Massive corruption scandals coupled with stunted economic growth drove the people to vote out the INC and give power to the BJP, which has a strong economic record especially in Gujarat. By giving power to the BJP, it seems that Indians are willing to turn a blind eye towards the atrocities committed by Narendra Modi, which include genocide in favor of economic revival and good governance.

Like the articulate Salman Rushdie said “by giving power to the BJP, India is in danger of betraying the legacy of its founding father"
