Session 8 :Political Socialization.

Political socialization is the process which develops our values, perceptions and ideologies. These ideas develop through different institutions e.g: family, religion, culture, media, education, government.
Family plays extremely vital role in this process. From the favorite brands of our mother to the very staunch discussions with papa, everything contributes in the development of an individual.
Education plays an inevitable role in the process of political socialization. In Pakistan, why are we not taught about the "Operation Searchlight" in our textbooks. Why are there chapters on the bravery and dignity of our soldiers?
Histories are constructed and vetted by the government and the state to ensure the propagation of nationalism.
Culture and religious affiliations are also very important. Especially, in the rural areas of Pakistan, people vote in the name of religion.

In the process of political socialization, unarguably it is quite true that an individual is affected by the nature and nurture of their upbringing. If in the case of an extended family living under a single roof, individuals have a variety of insights on political matters through their familial counterparts. However, the opinion that they deem as correct depends entirely on how they perceive the world around them, which is based on their education and personal experience.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the political education system of Pakistan is heavily influenced by the military armed forces, rather than the government itself. The history which makes it to the textbooks that is taught to our younger generations, depends entirely on what is thought to be morally correct and praise worthy. No events which somehow demoralise or belittle the armed forces make it to these textbooks and it is quite apparent if local history books are opened.

I agree with your point that there is a culture of political socialisation in every aspect of our lives; from pop culture to the religious beliefs that we hold.

However I think you missed out the importance of the media and how it can be used as a very effective tool to persuade the population to view events and circumstances in a particular way. This can be done through the importance that different events get on news, the discussions between political analysts or even though television ads and movies. Media can be used to highlight events that serve political purposes and ignore or overshadow events that do not. E.g the Peshawar attacks were highlighted in international media because it served to the war against terrorism while in the same week at least 100 women and children were reportedly kidnapped and 35 people killed when Boko Haram extremists plundered a remote village in north-east Nigeria and that did not get its dude importance in the international media.

This show how the most significant determinant of political socialisation is media and it influences us and our thinking in ways we do not even realise.
