The relationship between politics and Economics is so interwined that any political structure cannot prevail without first identifying which economic system the political ideology envisions. How a society utilizes its resources is a key defining point in the organization of collective human lives. Who owns the resources to produce, who works to produce and who gets the benefits from them are what ultimately define "power" in the economic field and since politics is power, economic power from ownership of resources determines what political system is in place. Economic means create social classes and hence social cleavages, and parties base ideologies according to solving problems for have-nots and aim at appeasing the haves. Politics is merely a part of the mega-structure set by economic bases and reflects the class definitions that the economic systems have moulded.
Capitalism is, like democracy, seen as the default structure internationally not because it has proven to be a success but because the other option has failed. scholars have even gone as far at disregarding its basis as an economic system; instead they call it an ideology in its own right. The basis os capitalism stems from self interest and that societies work best when individuals are left free to utilize their efforts to reap as many benefits as they can to ensure their own prosperity. This thereby entails the ownership of property, trade, competition, capital accumulation and extreme consumerism and production. It hence promotes individulism and the importance of interdependance. The main motto is: from each according to him ability and to each, regardless of his need.
There is no concept of welfare for those that are excluded from the market structure due to their lack of ability to fend for themselves and the state will ultimately disregard their needs and will favor the needs of those who have economic resources. Hence a class structure and power struggle emerges automatically from capitalism. Material inequalities that emerge and add to social fragmentation are completely ignored and an inhumane stance is taken. In the practical world, as we're witnessing poverty and starvation, both outcomes of leaving the invisible hand free to divide resources, are so ghastly that one questions the mere existence of such an economic system where the state and the society completely ignore the well being of a substantial amount of population simply because they lack the ability and resources to provide for themselves. This ugly face of capitalism is visible when we compare the model of pure capitalism to mixed economies where the situation is fare better and welfare dependent classes are treated as human beings. The basis of self interest translates into extreme selfishness in practicality. One cannot continue to live a life of luxury when macabre circumstances surround all those around. Material inequalities not only steal one's peace of mind but also manifest in physical outbursts when the have-nots grow to become a majority and the tendency for demonstrations, outbursts, revolts by the poor masses rises. Such tensions add to a constant threat of social mobility for gaining economic resources by the underclasses and show how unsustainable pure capitalism is in the long run.
In the practical world, we as humans, cannot shut ourselves from the grave states of our neighnours without doing anything to help them. Not many of us have the ignorance capabilities of Mary Antoinette to tell the peasant to eat cake if they're staring due to lack of bread. The interconnectedness of a society ensures that its survival is based on collective well being as that is basis of human existence and how social contracts are formed when citizens agree to live harmoniously together in a region. The basis of capitalism aims at creating class divisions in the society and strikes at the rooks of harmonious coexistence by creating huge gaps between the haves and have nots. No society can function peacefully in such a state and the only result can be that the workers get so frustrated that history shall repeat itself another major factory lockout shall occur.
