Session 16: Faulty bureaucracy

It seems to be a common assumption to be made that bureaucrats in Pakistan seem to do very less for the public good.

It was not always like this. British colonial legacy imparted a certain degree of professionalism to the office of public officials. It was supposed to be a transparent and accountable system.

However, the grim picture painted of our modern day bureaucracy would beg to differ from the notion of an efficient and reliable bureaucracy, which would ideally work for the public good.

Having being affected by political regimes over the year has resulted in a fragmented bureaucracy, which has little or no organisational structure.

Corruption, nepotism and a lack of due process are rampant in the Pakistani public office. What would then seem to be the solution?

It would make sense for legislation to be passed to somehow ensure that public officials have little incentive to break their respective legal and moral contracts while woking within the framework of a bureaucracy.
