Session 13 - Is education the key to solving Pakistan's problems?

If one lurks around long enough in any place, one can overher a debate regarding what is wrong with Pakistan and how to fix it. Ever so often, the conclusion reached regarding Pakistan's gravest issue or issues is the need to educate the masses. Problems range from corruption, to a puppet assembly, to rigged elections, to combating terrorism and so on. The one solution that promises to wipe away all such issues is education. I disagree.
Although, education serves a vital purpose in anh country or society I strongly believe education alone can not wipe out the above mentioned process. After all, the literacy rate is rising, but so are the threats that destabilise Pakistan and prove as an obstacle to growth.
Even terrorists are educated. Yes, they are educated in a form that we are unaccustomed to but nevertheless receive an education obtained from a Madrassa. It would be simple to pinpoint here that maybe Madrassa education is what is causing terrorism, however, Madrassa education in its own regard is an esteemed source of academia. Only few students become terrorists.
I believe the problem with Pakistani's is that we tend to blame others from every problem especially when it comes to the country's problems. Even within lums, people will complain about pollution and be seen littering next. People complain about corruption but have participated in bribery/ Rishwat atleast once in their life. People with MBA degrees form the patriarchal elite and fear empowerig their women and the list goes so on.
So the problem is not education. The  problem is not an external system. The problem is within each of us.

The question still remains, what is the key to solving Pakistan's problems?
There is no doubt that the fault is within each one of us, but how do we combat the vices in us.
For that I think, education and guidance is most vital.

I believe it is not about education that can solve Pakistan's problems or not, its about what kind of education is being done in Pakistan. The problem i believe is, that people in Pakistan are very grade, job oriented and that is why they get educated. This leaves the moral learning and growth out of education which i believe should be the whole and sole reason for education. It should make you a better human being. Any one can learn the definitions in a book and formulas for math but if you do not learn how to be a decent human being, show compassion to a stranger, hold the door for a woman you are not educated in my opinion and your degree means nothing to me.

So in my opinion, the problem with pakistani education is that it encourages the wrong kind of education. It is only recently that humanity subjects have started being offered and people are actually opting for them but even now one receives so much skepticism for majoring in political science for example, in our society.

there is no stadardize system od education in Pakistan. The people who can write and read, we consider him in literacy rate. Here is no education that creates the harmoney or can change the behaviours of the people. Many graduates are getting their degrees every year but standard of their degrees is not equal. The whole systems of every institution is not good, the people are getting education but the head of departments are not changing because of that the system of that institution is not good. the criteria of getting education in Pakistan is not good.

I agree with all your comments but I would like to elaborate on Maryam's comments. Education is seen as instrumental , therefore the intrinsic value of it is never learned . Secondly most of the education is seen as remote learning . Holistic education which concentrates on developing the soul of the human is something that is very rare in Pakistan that still needs to be developed.

Even our competitive system in LUMS, has an effect on what sort of human we become. A selfish one or a co-operative person .
