Session 23: Ethnic conflicts

Ethnic conflicts are basically internal identity conflicts of a country and are armed conflicts among civil groups. These are conflicts between different ethnic groups which may comprise of people united by similar culture, religion, origin and background etc.

If these ethnic groups share such similarities then why do conflicts arise among them? Ethnic conflicts have more to do with external influences rather than ethnic differences and these external influences cause disputes among each other.  Example of such external influences could be agencies of enemy countries which scheme to trigger rivalry among ethnic groups if there is room for some disagreement, on maybe the resources issue.

It is argued that ethnic conflicts are inevitable and this practice has been happening since generations. Ethnic conflicts can turn into such chaotic and violent situations that they could lead to partition altogether. However, understanding the reason behind generation of the conflict and attempting to respond and prevent the conflict can result in a workable solution with the co-operation of state leaders and drastic results like partition can be avoided.
