Last Blog. POL 100.

Ahh.. where to begin. Pol 100 has been a wonderful experience. It not only provided the kind of exposure I needed to decide whether or  not I wanted to major in Political Science (which I totally am now) but it was highly informative without ever really being boring. Initially the thought of writing two blogs per week and then commenting on two more people's posts seemed like a lot of work to do, but in reality, it really was not time consuming. It actually helped develop a political voice and opinion about certain ideologies in politics. I think the credit of that certainly goes to Sir Nausherwan who, from day one believed in a totally non conventional way of teaching. As he himself would say, "I don't care if you can define the term 'state' for me". I think that really is the point. Instead of learning certain definitions for a quiz, we instead engaged with the text on a more deeper level. Classes were made exceptionally entertaining as he would make us go on field work, talk to our partners, present certain ideas in class etc.

It not only allowed us to interact with our peers and get to know people from different religious and ethnic backgrounds but also made us tolerant to other peoples opinions. In short, gave us exposure and made us tolerant. There are a lot of things i learnt in this course, which a mere text book could not have taught me. My ideas about democracy, how it is considered to be the best form of government have drastically changed. Beliefs that we've held onto so strongly have been questioned and challenged in class and alternative view points have been provided.

And yes, how can I forget. One of the major things that I learnt was that Smoking is bad for you. Jokes, apart. I am actually genuinely concerned about the people who I know, smoking and often I'm telling people not to smoke and quoting the slides Sir talks about in class. I think in his brief time here, he really has managed to impact people, be it in a small number but it definitely counts. And i look forward to taking a course by him in my senior year, hopefully if he returns.

Well thank you for the very kind words and I'm glad that you've learned so much. And I'm glad that you've come so far.

Perhaps I will be back - students like you make me want to!
