The Yemen war is the result of the clash between two important actors, Iran and Saudi Arab, who have been fighting proxy wars since decades to get hold of the influence in the middle east. Although this is portrayed as the ideological conflict between Shia and Sunni, it is a conflict of interests that can alter the balance of power equation in the Middle East for years to come. This struggle for power between the two major actors has not occurred for the first time. These two powers have had their forces fighting in Syria, Lebenon and Iraq.
However, Yemen specifically is strategically important for Iran. If Iran acquires Syria, there would be a big security threat to Saudi Arab. Moreover, the Saudi Yemen border acts as a protectant of Saudi Arab from its biggest terrorist threat, AQAP.
