Make-up Post: Feminism and its Variations

Although I have touched upon the fact that feminism does have different variations that need to be considered, I feel like the discussion about feminism (which took place in class), has revealed that a radical and possibly aggressive nature of a faction of feminists has seemed to cloud over and obscure the main idea of feminism. The fact is, many people still surprisingly deem feminists to be irrational and frustrated women who are trying to be men. That is definitely not the case. It’s just something that needs to be addressed in our society because I don’t feel like many people understand that feminism is basically about women’s rights, meaning what is completely sensible for them to make demands for as individuals in the society.

Also important is the notion that there are a large number of Muslim feminists in the world who do believe that feminism goes hand in hand with Islam. The discussion in class proved to show that some people are of the view that feminists in general seem to view Islam as an oppressive religion to women. Someone brought up the example of how Hazrat Khadija (R.A) married Rasoolullah when she was a successful businesswoman and fifteen years older to him and how the feminists don’t seem to understand that this is representative of how women are respected in Islam. While that it is right to say that than is an example of how Islam respects women, it would be wrong to say that feminists don’t understand Islam. There are many people believing that Islam has a place for feminism, a variation that goes hand in hand with its beliefs. Yes, there is definitely a sort of feminism that would be starkly different to our own, whose proponents would wrongfully view Islam, but to say that all feminists in general think this way, is downright erroneous.
