session 6 - polyarchy

In the form of government that practices western polyarchy, there is still the problem of minorities and subcultures within a culture that needs to be recognized.
If the minorities like religious minorities, ethnic minorities, regional minorities, etc are not satisfied and are not given equal opportunities to participate in the government, the basic purpose of a democracy is lost. To implement a proper polyarchial system and maintain low conflicts, it is essential to provide security to all groups within a state and create opportunities for equal representation and equal rights.
Dahl's idea of polyarchy despite being quite thorough and also very effective is very difficult to implement in its true form. Where governments slip, people suffer, conflicts arise, and that according to Dahl is not true polyarchy.

That is the basic flaw of democracy: the reality differs from its application. The various models of Democracy prove how despite it being a rule of the people, most minorities are still neglected and majoritarionism replaces democracy and Marxism or elitism prevail which are basically one party ruling over another. The very fact that a purely pluralistic democracy where all factions are given equal and fair opportunities is such an unrealistic and un-achievable ideal makes us wary of the fact that democracy, despite being the default setting for ploitical regimes in the modern world, is so flawed and unfair towards minorities.
