Nationalism can said to be many things. Among those, it can called a tool to manufacture a false sense of unity in the public.
Having a solely nationalistic mindset is troublesome in internation relations for a couple of reasons. On the individual level, it is easy for the state to entice its members to act in matter suiting its aims and objectives, regardless of the individual's rights and betterment.
Nazi Germany, France during the French Revolution among others are few examples of a nationalistic outlook.
Things get more complicated with the infusion of other elements to solidify this nationalism. For instance, some states use religion as a tool to inspire nationalistic feelings in people to meet the state's ends.
Pakistan, Israel, Iran and other major states of the globe employ this tactic to fulfil their aims.
Nationalism implies this idea of self-determination, which gives every unique faction an impetus to demand for their rights. This, in turn, leads to problems of its own.

Using religion as a tool to fulfill nationalistic tendencies is the worst form of action that states can ever take. Getting religion mixed with politics causes nothing but chaos and it leads to greater problems for states to face.
Using religion to get their own motives is actually the worst way of doing their job. When someone plays with a person's religion is very brutal because playing with it is like you are playing with their basis of life on which they actually have build their life up.
