Session 21 : Women in Pakistan Army and politics

Women play an essential part in the development of any state and by not fully utilizing the services of more than 50% of its population , Pakistan is committing an unpardonable sin. In the Pakistani society Women are traditionally seen as home makes  whose primary job is looking after the family and procreation. Our conservative culture coupled with our religion play a part in cementing such sentiments in the society.

In terms of numbers, Pakistani women are relatively better represented in politics as compared to other developing countries with 21% of the total membership of the Parliament consisting of women. Standout women politicians like Benazir Bhutto, Hina Rabbani Khar , Shazia Murri show that the road for women in Pakistani politics is not as treacherous as initially believed. Critics may argue that most prominent women in Pakistani politics have reached a certain level due to their family ties and not because of sheer brunt of hard work. This is true but not entirely, it is a fact that these women do have strong political families backing them, but that argument cannot be used to take credit away from their achievements.

The army is another institution in which women are underrepresented. This is primary because of the fact that combat roles are reserved entirely for men, but things are slowly changing. Its troubling to see that only 32 spots are available for women cadets in the PMA as opposed to 2000 slots for men. This disparity is troubling but as times moves on one can only hope that women gain the recognition and representation that they deserve.

yes i totally agree with u, that women are playing an important role. Their talent can be seen clearly and instead of imprisoning them inside the walls of a house they should be allowed to reach the highest peak in every field and achieve greatness for their country.

I agree. The increase in education for women (in some areas of Pakistan), will make this more evident.
