There has been much criticism directed towards bureaucracies throughout the course of history primarily since there is a popular opinion that it abuses it's power. I believe that since members of bureaucracies are not elected and are therefore unrepresentative of the population and their demands, the role they play in the functioning of the government should not be profoundly significant.
Rampant corruption has taken place in countries which give considerable power to bureaucracies. Such 'government servants' seldom involve themselves in honest work and try to engage only in work that has considerable benefits for them. They often believe that the pay they get is minimal therefore it is their right to indulge in unethical activities such as bribery.
As a result, I believe that we should introduce several checks and balances on the bureaucracy as to limit its power so that such practices may be avoided. This follows from the words of Acton, "absolute power corrupts absolutely" and therefore in matters of a state, no one entity should posses such absolute power.

I agree that bureaucrats are not elected members and hence are not representatives of the society but I believe they still are appointed members of the Governemnt and there should be no reason why they shouldn't take their job seriously instead of involving in unfair practices. Like any other job, they are being paid to perform a certain task be it small or great amount of money. It is the power and authority they posses which leads to corruption eventually.
