Session 13 : success for our politicians

In the start of the semester, the instructor, i.e. Mr. Nausherwaan Haffez held a meeting with all the students individually. This meeting was based on a question answer session with the instructor, which seemed to be more of an interview to me. Questions included, name, major, year of study in Lums, number of siblings etc. in between that formal type of chit chat, Naush asked me a question; even before asking the question he said that no single student has answered me this question without taking some time or making a weird expression. Honestly speaking, I felt that I might be able to leave a good impression if I can answer this question in a better way than others. But things didn't go the way I wanted them to go.

The instructor asked the question that what you want to be in life. Fortunately or unfortunately, I also took some time and made the same weird expression before giving an extremely ambiguous and vague answer. I answered that I want to be successful, and as expected the next question was “how will you define success” and to this question, I was answer less. It’s been around five weeks since that interview but the answer to this question still remains uncertain to me.

Couple of days back, when going through the topic of assemblies; I thought the same question but this time I was not the one on the latter end but the politicians who were a part of these assemblies. I asked to myself “what was the ultimate goal of these politicians to come to the national and provincial assemblies and becoming a part of the governing party”. And regardless of the fact whatever their motto was, did the people who voted for them have any idea about it or not. I was quite confused as to what was the main reason behind these politicians fighting with each other to such an extent that they are ready to take the life of their opponent.

Quite interesting statement was given by one of our leading politicians who said that “politics has its own addictions. The sense of achievement that one feels when he comes to the assembly with a protocol of expensive security cars, and goes into the assembly hall to sit on his seat is simply priceless”. I personally wont criticize this politician, not because of what he said was totally irrational from a layman’s perspective but at least he had the courage to speak the truth in front of the whole nation.

I personally have no idea as to what is the main purpose of these politicians and how do they think they will achieve success. Is it by coming in the government and fulfilling all the promises done in the campaigning, or is it to become a part of the government and earn as much money as possible via illegal means, or is it to make the country move towards economic development and prosperity or become an agent of any other country and try to harm the sovereignty of your own country. Frankly speaking I have no idea about what their intentions are or they might be, nor do these anchors and writers have who write different thing against anyone, whom they think should be targeted given the fact that there is no guarantee about what they are writing is actually the truth or not. I believe that a person himself knows the best. The max that we can do is to connect the dots and hope that these representatives of the common people perform their duties well and make Pakistan a better place to live.
