Session 13: Democracy: A Reflection

At the beginning of this class, or rather before it had begun I considered politics to be a relatively straight forward exercise. However, with each passing session I learned about the functioning of democracy which is more complex than it seems to be. The various in-class exercises gave me a sense of the behind-the-scenes of a democratic political institution. Every time the activities would change my perspective on political processes which is why I found those more informative than the readings alone. I learned that it was easier to question and much difficult to perform when one is in the shoes of a politician.

Moreover, the hierarchy of democratic institutions is considered to be a vital element. Whereas, this may gave the political process its desired efficiency, mostly the dominant of voices are the ones that get heard, everyone else remains either silent or suppressed observers. Lastly, the person on the top of the chain of command gets to make the final decision which brings me to my question: Is democracy really what it seems to be?
