It is clear that after the Peshawar massacre, the military
has taken a greater role in the internal security of the country, intelligence
based operations are not only being carried out in the tribal areas, but also
in urban areas. Formation of apex committees, which consist of civilian and
military personnel, in every province and the passing of the 21st
amendment, allowing the establishment of military courts, are also
manifestations of the fact that the civilian govt, led by Nawaz Shariff, has
decided to take the back seat in the fight against terror and allow the
military to take the lead.
Whether this is a positive sign or not is debatable, but it
is pretty clear that the military has decided to finally root out the scum that
is terrorism from Pakistan once and for all. And this is indeed a positive
development. It is also worth mentioning that the Army under the leadership of
Raheel Shariff has been more pro-active rather than reactive. One example of
this is the launch of the operation Zarb-e-Azab.
