Where does power truly lie? Many believe, that in a state, power is mostly concentrated in the hands of a select few: the elite.
Defining 'elite' is itself a difficult task and it depends on a number of factors. I agree with the pluralist view which states that power lies in the hands of those people who are directly involved in the desicion making processes. This clearly implies that the people in top positions and posts in different institutions are not necessarily the ones who hold power. An individual may hold a prestigious, high post in a well renowned company but not be the one calling the shots. These people are the ones who form the elite.
The elite is spread out over a variety of different industries and spheres of influence in the state. Mostly, power ends up being concentrated in the hands of a few thousand people at the top. This makes us reevaluate the idea of equality, democracy and class structure. When it comes to making important decisions that shape the country, its economy and its image worldwide, the elite plays a vital role as they are the ones making the main decisions in their own respective spheres of influence such as law, government, media and other top institutions.
