session 12 - Are political parties democratic in nature?

Are political parties truly democratic? It can be argued that different political parties represent the different point of views that individuals in a state have. In this sense, they are truly democratic. But with countries like Pakistan is it truly the case? Many political scientists argue that parties divide. They divide the masses that would otherwise be united under a leader, for instance a military dictator. But I think otherwise, a military dictator would enforce his views or values on the masses through his laws. However, in a system that consists of political parties, this is not the case. They are in their most basic sense, democratic. They provide a s forum for educated  individuals to chanelise their thoughts and debate over and implement policy. Parties also give the uneducated indiduals of the society understanding of the country's politics through mediums like talk shows (in Pakistan's case). They help individuals develop their thoughts and opinions about political parties and their stances. Thus, it can truly be said that political parties are democratic and I believeare important in the road to achieving democracy.
