Session 13: Guantanamo Bay
Since we’ve
slightly gone over the plight of Guantanamo Bay prisoners in class, I felt that
I could talk about them for this blog post. The situation of those at
Guantanamo Bay is one that affects me greatly. It’s appalling to note that the
prisoners here undergone heinous acts of torture and many of them have not even
been given the right to a fair trial. Obama’s promise of shutting it down by January
2010, is one that remains unfulfilled.
One can only
read about the experiences of those who have been lucky enough to be released,
and despite their release it makes sense to say that their lives will never be
the same. The psychological turmoil which treatment in the prisons has put them
under is such that will leave eternal scars. One torture technique that has
been practiced there is that of ‘force feeding’ . What is so troublesome to
mull over is the fact that Muslim prisoners were subjected to this excruciating
method in the month of Ramadan.
The extent of human rights violations carried
out in prisons such as Guantanamo Bay is tremendous and what I’ve mentioned
here is nothing compared to the wide spectrum of humiliating and painful kinds
of torture humans are made to suffer. It’s about time that such places were
shut down for good. It’s as if in the quest for making the world a better place
people end up becoming monsters themselves. In fact instances such as this show
that people in charge of prisons don’t care about justice. There is basically
no quest here. It’s all about the lack of inhumanity and abuse of power.
