Session 13: Democracy in Pakistan

Democracy is hailed to be the end of history because of its ideal system that protects minority rights and promises political equality. The government in this case protects the rights and liberties of the entire population and works for the collective good. In reality, however it tends to be the tyranny of the majority protect its own rights and interests often at the cost of minority. The majority wins in a democracy by the sheer factor of numbers and appoints representative that work for their interest. This has been proves in Pakistan on multiple occasions and in numerous laws. The blasphemy laws that exist in Pakistan primarily to protect the interests of the Muslim majority but have often been used as tools to persecute other religious minorities. Another instance if minority rights being degraded by the state has been in the case of developments in Baluchistan.

I agree with mahams point.Instead of ensuring the provision of equal rights, the democratic system in pakistan leads to minority repression. An example of this is the second amendment to the constitution which explicitly states that the Ahmadis are non muslims and prevents them from propagating/practicing their religion in public thus denying them basic rights.
