Session 12: Parties -Not Always Beneficial

The reading for session 12 focuses on parties. I have always considered parties as groups competing to prove that they each individually possess the capabilities to run the country. This reading proved however, that there is far more to the concept and also the fact that parties, despite having numerous benefits can understandably be considered disadvantageous to society.
It is this view that catches my attention because parties then seem to be doing more harm than good. Furthermore, despite many who claim that parties work towards representing the views of the community as a whole, can we really say that parties in Pakistan aspire to unite the Pakistani people? To me it has always seemed like parties here create further factions.
The reading also talks of how parties may not be aiming towards the benefit of the people and would rather be hoping towards their own ulterior motives. Doesn’t that explain the level of corruption that is so high within parties here? Doesn’t that explain how important it is for parties like MQM to commit murders on a wide scale and establish Karachi as a city that is considered to be highly dangerous? In order to do good for a people is it then necessary to make sure you start eradicating those who hold opposing views? It seems natural for those steeped in corruption.
