Session 12: Pakistan - A multiparty democracy.

Pakistan is a multiparty democracy which according to Andrew Heywood signifies that, "...no party is large enough to rule alone, leading to a system of coalition government."

Today Pakistan is encompassed with various problems including terrorism, inflation, energy problems, drone attacks, deteriorating business environment and unemployment. One of the primary reasons for why these problems are prevalent in Pakistan today and are likely to worsen in the future is the immense disintegration caused by the multiparty system that is existent in Pakistan. Political parties play a very important role with regard to maintaining stability in a country. In Pakistan however, the political parties have invested most of their power and control in further weakening the social, political and economic structure of an already weak country by largely being ineffective and corrupt.

In Pakistan we see different parties gaining their strength from different areas and provinces. In addition, the dominant leader in a party is more indulged in gaining strength in their specific areas of control and leading their party into winning majority support and elections. In a nutshell, these political parties are more into facilitating themselves than Pakistan, which they are originally entitled to serve.

I would like to add to the point about certain parties deriving their strength from certain geographic areas by pointing out that after coming into power, these parties then also tend to pay attention to only these strongholds. For example, Nawaz Sharif and his fixation on Punjab.

I agree. I think it's also the overall unity of the people which is badly affected by the advent of so many parties which create numerous factions within the Pakistani society.
