Session 13: Political Ideologies

Of all the political ideologies I find liberalism most ideal one and conservatism most realistic one though I don’t support it at all. I support left wing parties with liberal mindset as individualism, freedom, equality, reason, toleration, consent and constitutionalism are the elements or traits that I would prefer over hierarchy, human imperfection, authority, and organicism that conservatism has to offer. Both socialism and liberalism promote equality.

I would like to focus more on ‘reason’ that has been mentioned as one of the important elements of liberalism. As now-a-days we are frequently told by some religious scholars and other people with conservative and extremist mindsets that we are not allowed to question the teachings that are passed on to us from our ancestors or different laws of religion.

I have even heard from several people that even thinking rationally about religion or trying to argue or debate on different issues regarding the religion is a sin in itself. I don’t think if it’s right to have such rigid rules and restrictions as human beings were given this ability to think critically on different matters regarding their existence or the existence of universe by the God himself. Our religion was supposed to be a progressive religion that had to develop with the developments in the world.

Sad is the fact that we don’t see any implementation of ‘ijtehad’ in different schools of thoughts of religion. I’m focusing more on religion and religious forces as they do play a crucial role in shaping our policies. And different militant groups that have turned our lives into a living hell are seen using the name of religion to justify their acts.

Most of these people use religion to turn people into suicide bombers or ‘jihadis’ by telling them their only goal in life is to fight the forces or ‘fitna’ and they are not allowed to question what is told to them about religion by their masters or preachers.
