Session 12- Pakistan's political parties

We often decry political parties in Pakistan for failing to solve the problems of the masses. However, what we do not take into account is the conditions under which these parties have developed and operated, let us consider the example of the PPP, which has had to face serious oppression during military rule.  Despite the removal of its leaders from the office of the prime minister, quite a few times, the PPP has resisted the temptation to mark itself as a party strictly for hard line Sindhi nationalists, seeking separation from a Punjabi dominated centre.

Not only do these parties provide a voice for different ethnic groups in Pakistan but they also represent the various social classes in Pakistan. The PPP represents the rural farmer where as the PML-N represents the urban trader. Thus it is safe to say the very strength of these parties and the key benefit they provide to the state of Pakistan, as a collective unit, is inclusivity for all the various ethnic, religious, social groups.
