The significance of politics as a mode by which the common population makes, preserves and amends the rules that regulate their lives, cannot be undermined. However, it is not only confined to the government sector. It’s existence in our social lives cannot be negated, either.
Although integral in formatting and ensuring the continuity of a system of governance, being the supercilious creature he is, man has been able to maneuver politics for his own personal gain. Man is known to have ‘unlimited wants’ and the structure of politics ensures that ‘wealthier the healthier’. Seldom has a political elite put public welfare ahead of his own personal motives. As Robert Casey puts it, “Any man who has ever tried to use political power for the common good has felt an awful sense of powerlessness.”
As it has persisted since the earliest of days dated in history books, political representation in the government has rested with the rich elites. A norm that has to be changed if politics is to excel in it’s true colors, as it’s meaning suggests. As Noam Chomsky affirms, “Concentration of wealth yields concentration of political power."
