A key feature in dealing with the
executive is the separation of powers. The executive, in theory, is awarded a
lot of power and there need to be a check and balance for this power. This
check and balance comes from the separation of power where every branch of
government serves to share and balance the power awarded to it. However, in a
country like ours, it is often the case that a branch of government oversteps
because the branches which are to provide the check and balance are not strong
enough. E.g.: the many military coups, the over involvement of judiciary in
political (and other) matters, and the invalidity of the legislature. I feel
that there is also the problem where the executive has too much power in
specialized ministries where the executive branch of government comprises of
both the prime minister and also his cabinet. In such a case, there is often
mismanagement of resources and conflict because the prime minister cannot have
the same amount of knowledge of all specialized ministries and so may be unable
to make informed decisions if he/she is too over involved with the cabinet and
the decision making process may be over stretched if the cabinet minister and
the prime minister do not agree on something and may even result in a feud.
I agree to the idea that there has to be separation of power among the people comprising a government, this is necessary to maintain a fair use of power by the executives and will lessen corruption to a great extent, unless though, the division of power gets accumulated by a cooperated manifest of the executives, collectively benefiting their vested interest at the cost of the society. And this collective abuse of power is very common in our country.
ReplyDeleteSocial class, I think, is one of the biggest driving element for such people to cater their vested interests. The executives care for the social class they themselves belong to, they care for their status and of those who's company define them. So it is really hard to run away from such sad possibilities of corruption but separation of power is, in my opinion, a very good way to of doing our best to prevent this.
