Session 10: Leadership styles in Pakistan

I could not help but notice that all three leadership styles mentioned in the reading are practical and have their own pros and cons. None of the style would be perfect of course because it depends on the leader himself and his personality which results in the progress of a nation.

All three leadership styles, namely, Laissez-faire leadership, transactional leadership and transformational leadership would no doubt have been adopted by different leaders of our nation in the past and the present. Some citizens will favor Laissez-faire leadership as it hands off responsibility to common people and hence fosters harmony. On the other hand some might believe that transactional leadership is better because the leader gets to make policies for the citizens and maintains political unity. But I believe that for a nation like ours, we need a transformational leader. Pakistan as a nation is not ready to hand over all the responsibilities to the citizens, nor does it need other people to govern them, because all of this has already been done in the past and it has not resulted in any betterment for the nation.

What we need is vision and inspiration; the kind of leadership which can transform the nation and make it prosperous and proud. This kind of leadership might finally be able to make our country stand on its own.

  1. there is no doubt that the style of leadership has a great impact on the prosperity of the nation. However, Pakistan's problems do not limit to having an inappropriate leadership style only.Even if transformational style is adopted, there are a lot of social, economic, financial and strategic issues that the country has to deal with in order to move towards prosperity.
