Political parties play a vital role in shaping government and
policies of a country except for the situation of martial but even within the
state of martial law some parties seem to play an important role as PMl(Q) at
the time of Musharraf.
I personally believe in politics of ideology. I think a
party should have an ideology of its own that represents the mindset of its
supporter as ‘representation’ has been stated as one of the functions that
political parties are supposed to perform.
In our multiparty system we have parties representing
various mindsets and diverse groups of people. For instance people’s party is a
left wing party and people with liberal mindset have always supported that
party, then there are right wing parties as PML-N and jamaat-e-islami and other
religious parties.
And we have nationalist parties as well that have their own
agendas as pashtun nationalist parties and baluch nationalist parties as well. Then
we have PTI that seems to be ‘catch-all’ type as mentioned in the reading. As
they have never revealed their proper stance. At one point they are talking
about negotiations with Taliban and at the same time they are trying to get the
support of the liberal, educated elite of this country.
Different parties work on different agendas but they are
sort of a necessity in promoting interests of different groups or ethnicities.

Labeling parties as liberal or religious wont be a good option.I believe that while talking about ideologies, we should bring into limelight the mandates of different political parties, which as far as i have studied are quite identical.
