Mostly, law on paper is very different from how it is actually carried out. States all over the world have constitutions but the way these are implemented or whether they are abided by depends on a number of factors. The way these laws are interpreted depends on the judiciary and hence it plays a major role in the governance of states all over the world.
In Nazi Germany, the face of the judiciary was very different from what was happening behind the scenes. Judges in Hitler's Germany condemned the absence of civil rights and anti-Semitist laws that formed a crucial part of the regime. This created the illusion that the judiciary was still independent. In reality, the Nazis had a stronghold over every part of the political system and the judiciary had no concrete role over any laws. The German judges were privately pressured to do what suited Hitler's regime. Due to the corrupted judiciary system, trials could now occur exactly like Hitler wanted them to. The judges had little choice than to be puppet accomplices in the Nazis repressive regime.
This example shows the power and importance of the judiciary as well as highlighting the implications to the state if the judges are controlled or coerced in any way.
Judges have a stronghold on laws in the constitution and without an impartial or sovereign judiciary, the smooth running of the state will be an arduous task.
