Session 10: Leadership in Pakistan

Leadership is the action of influencing a group of people to achieve particular goals.

Leadership can be of various forms, including explanations such as charismatic leadership, sociological phenomenon, organisational necessity and political skill.

In Pakistan, charismatic leadership is one of the common form of leadership. The personal characteristics and the personality traits of the leader, instead of the party policies are advertised.

This can be seen in the case of Tehrike Insaaf's leader, Imran Khan. Most of his political support is based on his charisma, looks, ability to speak and his fitness rather than his policies or political achievement.

The problem with this form of political appeal is that charismatic authority is not sustainable beyond the person. As seen with the case of Pakistan People's Party, the charismatic leadership by Benazir Bhutto ended with her death. Therefore, the party loyalists felt a need to highlight the 'legacy' of Benazir Bhutto and focus on her son as the successor. Nonetheless, the party lost a substantial following because their support was based on the individual rather than the party policies.

The political importance of one person and the concentration of power exist within the parties as well and go contrary to the principles of democracy.
