Session 16 : What is a bureaucracy?

Organisations, both in the public and private sectors are reliant on bureaucracies to work. Bureaucracy is basically a way of executively organizing large number of people, who need to work together. The formation of a bureaucracy in a government helps to ensure that the people work together in a reconcilable manner by defining everyone's role within a heirarchy.
This system of governance is eminent due to its total heirarchy of authority. It comprises of non elected government officials who implement the laws and policies made by elected officials and regulates various government activities. Bureaucracies hold a firm chain of command. They are key components in public administration. It works like a pyramid, with the top bureaucrat having the most power. The power flows down from the top of the heirarchy and diminishes as it goes down.

Although bureaucracy, does have its pros and cons, yet it is the organisational model that prevails today. As it is the tool that maintains law and order, implements public policies and produces services.
