Usually, Liberalism and Conservatism are thought of as distinct opposites.
However, after having out to fill out a questionnaire asking whether I was a liberal or a conservative, I had trouble coming to reconcile with either of those idealogical propositions.
Some aspects of both these ideologies seem like they could apply on an individual. People have been know to be traditionalists, with a strong focus on preserving values passed through the ages, yet they can be rational at the same time. Applying the values of conservatism on a select ideas and the principles of liberalism on others is a potentially valid possibility.
Furthermore, being tolerant does not necessarily disallow someone from being a conservative.
How do we determine the ideology of a particular individual if there are conflicting ideologies at place?
Do the relative strengths of a certain ideologies count into the equation?
It is vital to understand how an ideology might shape personnel's social behaviours.

It is not possible for any human being to be completely liberal or conservative. every Human being has his own affiliations and every one want to get freedom from laws and restriction.
ReplyDeleteI think Abdullah makes a very valid point here.It is human nature that we selectively perceive ideologies by grouping them but at the end of the day all these typologies are flexible and open to interpretation.Because the human mind is complex,a overlap between these seemingly irreconcilable ideologies is what makes generalisations difficult and problematic.
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting point of view Abdullah. By realizing that political idealogies dont necessarily need to be mutually exclusive, can we offer a better solution to the world?
ReplyDeleteNice post and I think there is definitely room to be a "liberal-conservative". Political ideologies can rarely be narrowed down to a particular perspective and there is often heavy borrowing done by individuals from disparate ideological perspectives to suit their particular set of beliefs.
