Make up post: Equality is not necessarily justice

Equality in its broadest sense is where everyone is equally endowed with right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. All men are equal in the eyes of law and hence should be treated equally. Every life by virtue of being a human life is considered equal in value and should be given equal opportunity to live freely and contribute to society.

However, this worth of being an equal human does not mean that everyone should be treated equally in every situation and every aspect of life and expect to attain justice. For instance, in a class where teaching in English is perceived as a uniform language and method to teach, not everyone is being provided justice as some students might not be able to understand the language as easily as others and hence equality is not providing justice here.

This issue could be catered by the concept of equity where everyone is given what they need to be successful unlike equality where everyone is treated the same.  Since every individual possesses some uniqueness, the basic definition of fairness and justice should also be redefined taking in account the concept of individual differences.

Conclusively, if equality is provided without considering individual needs and differences, equality would not necessarily mean fairness and justice for all as equal treatment does not erase our individual differences and requirements.

  1. I agree with your point, we need equity instead of equality. Giving equality to all means we are providing opportunities for all but equity ensures that these opportunities are being actually availed by the people in need.
