Session-8 Kinds of Authority

According to Max Weber, there are three types of authorities: traditional authority, charismatic authority and legal-rational authority.

Traditional authority is the one which is in practice for ages. It may have different shapes according to the society and customs. For example, most of the societies are patriarchal while few are matriarchal. Traditional authority is the most practiced one. In South Asia this type of authority is still experienced and acknowledged.

Charismatic authority resides in the personality in which a leader influences the masses by his speech, his dealings and his appearance. We can say that in Pakistan, Imran Khan seems to be a charismatic leader as he influences the emotions of people by his speeches. Charismatic leadership has many flaws. The ideology resides with the person in many cases. People like the person and follow him indifferent of the consequences of following.

Legal-rational authority is considered to be the most beneficial and practicable authority, as it entails a proper system and authority seems to reside in the position rather than the person containing it. It is considered as a right of elected personnel to make laws and force people to obey them.. It does not focuses on the circumstances about how and when to apply a system yet it legitimizes it.
