Session 22: War

War is a state of armed conflict between states or autonomous organizations. They are the armed manifestation of international conflicts. There are different types of wars that take place for various reasons.  The numerous wars that have taken place in histories have been the result of conflict of ideas or conflict of interest.

Conflict of ideas includes nationalism, ethnic, religious or ideological conflicts. There have been various instances of wars. The War of Independence of 1857 in British India was a nationalist war that wanted freedom from the imperial power. The Cold War was an ideological conflict between the Capitalist USA and the Communist Russia.

Conflicts of interest pertain to territorial disputes, control of government and economic conflicts. The Kashmir dispute has resulted in a lengthy war between India and Pakistan regarding territorial issues. The Bangladesh Liberation war of 1971 was the result of ethnic conflict between the Punjabis and the Bangalis that ultimately transformed into a territorial demand for freedom. The US war on Iraq is deemed to be the result of economic conflicts, or in USA’s case, economic gains despite the fact that it was posed as an ideological war.
