Being a sophomore and someone who needed Intro to Pol as his
degree requirements, I was really worried throughout these past two years as I
was not getting Intro to Pol due to enrollment issues. I used to hear it from
all my peers that I really need to take this course as soon as possible because
this course builds your base in political science. Unfortunately I took a
couple of other Pol courses before taking this one to ensure my credit hours
were on track. This semester I finally got enrolled in Intro to Pol and I can
without any qualms say, what a base this course has built for me.
Throughout this course, one thing, which stood out for me,
was that this course made me think. There was never a point where we had to
open the course book, rote learn concepts and then just reproduce them on a
piece of paper. This course was definitely taught in the best way possible. We
as students are so immune to the system that all we do is we learn the course
pack inside out and then during exams and quizzes we vomit everything we have
learned on the examination paper. The best thing about this course was the fact
that we had no quizzes or written exams. Instead we had blog posts that made us
think before approaching or applying the various concepts we learned in this
course. By the help of writing our own blogs and then commenting on other
people’s blogs, we got a chance to make this class as interactive as possible.
Each one of us by now knows the writing style of any other person and while blogging;
I would definitely go and read the blog posts of those of my favorite writers.
Not only this, we got a chance to apply all the concepts practically through
the presentations, field work and the constructive debates that used to go on
in class.
Coming to the topics we uncovered during this course. We
literally touched upon every single topic we need to know in the field of
Politics. This course was good enough for anyone who had no idea whatsoever
about politics to get a grasp of the various concepts that are used while
studying politics. Through this course, I even got to bash the ever popular and
everyone’s famous so called “democracy,” through my mid term paper. I would
conclude my blogging by saying that the thing that stood out for me the most,
and I repeat is that this course constantly made me think about everything I
learned. It was never about learning and re producing, it was about learning
and then practically and pragmatically applying those concepts in our everyday
lives! That was the standing out factor for me definitely.
Fantastic post Hamza. I'm glad I read both your posts tonight - you've been a great contributor to both classes I look forward to ending the class strong!
