There is an instructor in LUMS who gives a course particularly focused on the concept that veil is not permitted in Islam, someone tell me please isn't it biased too? Let people decide what they want to wear either in the name of religion or in the name of their own will. We always see the world through our own lens and do not want to see or listen other ideas. It is indeed very difficult to be neutral but once you realize that you should listen calmly to other point of views then perhaps you can be less biased and can be flexible in different situations. This is one step towards success because you make yourself open towards new ideas and trust me when you realize your biases, you always get more knowledge.

In my opinion one can not completely ever be without a bias. I think it is because of the biases that we hold which make us who we are, and shape our thoughts. I think it is okay for one to hold these biases so long as they don't cloud their judgement completely or be intolerant to other peoples opinions.
ReplyDeleteExcellent post. There is just as much intolerance from liberals as there is from conservatives, except often times liberals will think of their arguments as “correct” and “enlightened”. However, I agree with your perspective that you all should decide what to believe – you guys are ultimately what matters and you should make your own decisions about life based on sober and rational reasoning. Be what you want to be and think what you want to think. There must be no compulsion in thinking.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, we have associated almost every thing western with liberalism and every thing which is religious, we call it conservativeness. My father used to tell us about his youth, when students who were quite religious came out to the streets to protest against Bhutto's assassination. Sadly our society is heading towards this situation where long beard and abayas are stigmatized with being narrow-minded, and people think of those people as having less acceptance towards others' opinions and ideas. Perhaps that's because of the small percentage of people who have this extremist mentality. I know a lot of religious people who are quite open to accepting others' practices as my own roommate wears an abaya and she has almost never been judgmental towards others because of their dressing or their opinions plus she's a boxer. ;)
